Crewe FC turn on the Styal with third successive win
Crewe FC 2
CREWE FC continue to show their title credentials after victory against Styal at the Cumberland Arena on Saturday took them within a point of the Cheshire League Division One summit.
The hosts’ third successive win, following victories over the division’s heavyweights Knutsford and Garswood United, came courtesy of goals from Matt Pearson and PJ Hudson.
Crewe made one change, Nath Southern replacing the absent Craig Malbon, from the side which beat Garswood and the incoming Southern immediately linked up well with Pearson.
Veteran goalkeeper Wes Newton was rarely called upon in a tight affair, but it was the hosts who found a way through on the verge of half time when top scorer Pearson rose to head home a Stevie McNicholl corner.
Crewe, whose recent run of form has been built on a solid defensive foundation, looked dangerous on the counter attack after the interval as Carl Everall and Luke Goddard looked to break out from the back four on various occasions.
The defensive pair’s darting runs forward created chances for Pearson and Southern, but neither were able to convert.
However, Crewe made sure of the three points late on when Hudson struck a half volley against the crossbar and in after good work from substitute Josh Rowley.
Crewe take a break from league action on Saturday when they travel to Greenalls PSO in the first round of the Division One Cup.
