Pioneer pair win bowls knockout competition
10:15am Tuesday 4th February 2014 in Sport
A PAIR from Pioneer A bowling team won a thrilling final in the South West Cheshire Indoor Bowls League’s Pairs Knockout competition at Coppenhall.
Kath Crawford and Steve Burrows went 5-0 down after two ends to Dave Tew (Coppenhall D) and Jack Hazeldine (Coppenhall B), but then clawed their way back to 5-5.
In the play-off end, Kath Crawford put an excellent first bowl in front of and close to the jack, while Dave Tew put a bowl near the ditch.
Steve Burrows tried to block the path to the winning bowl and Jack Hazeldine had two attempts at hitting the winning bowl into the jack to push it through to Dave Tew's back bowl, but couldn't find the right line to prevent Kath and Steve’s comeback victory.
Earlier in the competition, last year's winners Rob Mellor and Phil Gregory (Swettenham A) lost out to Jean Graham and Joan Burns (Haslington D), who had earlier won their game against Peter Ellis and Steve Everitt from Coppenhall A.
Jean and Joan reached the semi finals, as did Coppenhall B’s Dawn and Georgia Broadfield, but they could not beat the eventual finalists.
