IN-FORM Chuks Aneke bagged twice against Gillingham on Saturday at the Priestfield Stadium to lift Crewe Alexandra out of the League One drop zone.

If the Railwaymen, now two points above the relegation spots, remain in English football’s third tier it will be largely thanks to the man leading their scoring charts.

The Arsenal loanee grabbed his 15th and 16th goals of the season either side of the break, before helped set up Mathias Pogba late on.

Aneke opened the scoring from close range on five minutes, but Amine Linganzi pulled the hosts level with a header from a short corner on the half hour mark.

But Aneke then nodded home Matt Tootle’s cross on 53 minutes before releasing Uche Ikpeazu, who found Pogba to skilfully flick the ball into the net with seven minutes remaining.

The Alex have played a game more than several of their relegation rivals, but the win takes them into 19th place in League One.
