Crewe Alexandra 0 Colchester United 0
CREWE Alexandra failed to clinch a valuable Easter weekend double after a goalless draw with relegation rivals Colchester United on Monday.
With both sides situated only one point above the dropzone, the draw could prove more beneficial to visitors Colchester whose superior goal difference keeps them two places above the Alex.
A 3-1 win at fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town on Good Friday lifted the Railwaymen out of the relegation spots thanks to goals from Mathias Pogba, Uche Ikpeazu and Anthony Grant.
But Steve Davis’ side were unable to break the deadlock against Colchester and had goalkeeper Ben Garratt to thank for keeping them in the tie on several occasions.
The youngster saved from Gavin Massey and former West Ham United striker Freddie Sears, who also struck the post in what would prove the game’s best chance.
Ikpeazu could have stolen the points for Crewe late on, but failed to direct his header on target from Byron Moore’s cross.
