A HOST of internationals, professionals and celebrities will face off for charity in honour of a well-respected amateur player who lost his battle with cancer last year.

Husband, father and Crewe Athletic FC footballer Gareth Jones passed away aged 30.

Now Crewe FC manager Carl Everall and his brother Si are hosting a game in his honour in a bid to raise money for Gareth’s family’s chosen charity, as well as a bench in his name at Crewe Cemetery.

Billed as ‘The Everall Derby’, players already include Nottingham Forest’s David Vaughan, former Crewe Alexandra record signing Steve Jones and Northern Ireland international Steve Jones.

Also involved are Jay Kontzle, from UK boyband The Mend, England scout Nigel Deeley, Burton Albion skipper Lee Bell, ex-Aston Villa man Mark Draper and Gregor Rioch, former professional and son of ex-Arsenal manager Bruce.

“We both have hit certain criteria,” said Carl. “A family member from both our own and Gareth's must be involved, a celebrity, professional footballer and ex-professionals as well as someone we work with.

“Gareth’s family are actively involved as are several sponsors including Everybody Leisure and other private companies.

“All we ask is the community get behind the game and we have your support. On the gate, we will ask for a donation of your choice to watch the game (minimum £1). I’m sure it's going to be a cracker for a cause close to many people's heart.”

There are plenty more stars involved and local footballers who are stepping up and leading the way who are all donating £10 to play.

Kick off is 2.30pm at the Cumberland Sports Arena, June 7. A Nantwich under sixes game will precede the fixture, as well as programmes, stalls and refreshments.
