OUT-of-contract duo Max Clayton and Byron Moore could keep Crewe guessing over their futures.

Boss Steve Davis has revealed both players have been offered fresh terms as he looks to rebuild his squad for next season.

However Clayton, 19, and Moore, 25, are likely to wait and see if any other options materialise over the next few weeks.

“We’d be delighted if they both signed,” explained Davis. “They could play a big part for us next season.

“Max has had an offer for a while but we have just put something new together in the last few weeks for him to ponder.

“It’s a good contract. There’s more thought and it’s in line with our structure. I think it would help Max to stay here and develop so we’ve done what we can and we’ll wait and see.

“Byron on his day is as good as anyone in League One. Wingers are hard to get so it’s worth trying to keep him. He’s a very experienced Crewe player and would be useful to the younger lads.”

AJ Leitch-Smith became the fifth to be released as Davis makes room for fresh faces and both Thierry Audel and Lee Molyneux could also be offloaded if other clubs declare an interest.

Defender Audel scored three goals in 14 games during a loan spell with Lincoln, while winger Molyneux hit six at Accrington Stanley.

“We have had some initial discussions with their agents but no decision has been made on either of them,” continued Davis. “They will have a chance in pre-season and we’ll take it from there.”

The search is on for a new goalkeeper to replace Steve Phillips with only 20-year-old Ben Garratt left on the books.

“We’ll try to bring in a similar type to Steve,” added Davis. “One who can possibly be first choice and challenge Ben who ended the season in great form.

“He could also help us out on the coaching side as well.”

Crewe face Championship new boys Wolves as part of their pre-season schedule with a home clash on Saturday, July 26.

They also travel to Nantwich on Sunday, July 13 and Macclesfield on Tuesday, July 22.
