CREWE Alexandra will relish the opportunity to burst Fleetwood Town’s bubble in the big kick-off on Saturday, August 9.

The Alex intend to gatecrash the party big time as they travel to new boys The Cod Army for their League One season opener.

Having won six promotions over the past decade, most of the credit has been heaped on chairman and energy entrepreneur Andy Pilley after bankrolling this meteoric rise.

Boss Steve Davis is looking forward to the big day – only seven weeks away.

“I’m sure Fleetwood are just as excited as us because we’re looking at League One fixtures,” he explained.

“We had a bad day there in the cup and we’ll look to do a lot better than that. It is a decent start for us. It’s a good league and we want these challenges and these games.

“We want to pit ourselves against the teams in this league every week and that’s what we’re doing.

“It’s going to be tough but we want to try and push on now and have a better start than we did last season.”

A double-header against Barnsley follows, travelling there in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, August 12 before a league clash at Gresty Road on August 16.

Crewe host local rivals Port Vale on September 13 and go away on January 24.

They travel to Oldham on Boxing Day and close the season at home to Bradford on May 2.

Byron Moore has opted to leave the club as a free agent while Davis closes in on his first pre-season signing.

A long-term loan deal for a young Premier League winger is all but done and dusted.

“I have a chance to take a couple of Premier League players that have been offered to us,” added Davis.

“It’s almost guaranteed we can have one but it won’t happen straight away as we wait to find out if they start pre-season with them or us.

“One or two players are exciting options for us. Signing them on loan is a great help financially and they can make a difference to us.

“We give the lads an opportunity so it works both ways but they have to earn their place in the side.”
