MIDFIELDER Chris Atkinson has become Crewe’s second signing of the summer The 22-year-old arrives on a two-year deal after impressing boss Steve Davis during pre-season.

Released by Championship outfit Huddersfield last month, Atkinson has also had loan spells at Tranmere, Bradford and Chesterfield en route to 76 FL appearances.

“We’re delighted that Chris has agreed to join us,” explained Davis.

“He’s impressed on trial and the fans got a glimpse of what he can do at Chester over the weekend.

“He’s a ball-playing midfielder with a great energy who will get around the pitch for us.

“He loves to get forward and link with the front players and we’ll look for him to contribute some goals for us.”

Following Scott Shearer to the Alexandra Stadium, Atkinson followed up his goal at Chester (1-1) by supplying some rare bright spots in Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Macclesfield.

Wade Fairhurst’s 7th-minute strike proved enough to secure an upset for the non-league side.

Former Crystal Palace striker Ibra Sekajja replaced fellow trialist Cameron Lancaster but struggled to get into the game after being deployed down the Alex right.

Vadaine Oliver looked lively after coming off the bench for the final half-hour as he gets set for a big year ahead.

“He had a little set back with his ankle and is a week or so behind the rest of the group,” added Davis.

“We’re being cautious because we don’t want him to break down again.

“He scored at Leek (1-1) and then started at Chester so he was a bit sore and stiff.

“We’ll build up his fitness gradually and won’t take any risks because this is a big season for him.

“The most important thing is that all the players get their fitness levels up and come through pre-season without injuries.”

Brad Inman is also looking to push on with the big kick-off just two weeks away.

The 22-year-old is currently relishing a free role in a new-look system.

“Last season I underachieved and I know that,” he said.

“I’m looking to get at least 10 goals this time.

“Whoever is playing in that front three is getting judged on how many we score so it’s down to us.

“Last year I didn’t get a pre-season behind me so it’s good to get one and I feel better for it.

“Hopefully we can start the season well.”
