STEVE Davis believes Crewe Alexandra will come good after Tuesday night’s heartbreak against Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers.

Jermaine Beckford broke Alex hearts with an extra-time winner to prevent any Capital One Cup upset at Gresty Road.

Brad Inman had given the hosts a surprise second-minute lead before Darren Pratley conjured up a first-half leveller.

Beckford looked to have sealed victory in stoppage time but Marcus Haber kept Crewe in it after almost eight minutes of added time.

Just as thoughts began to turn towards penalties, Beckford flicked the ball under Ben Garrett to make it 3-2 and fire Bolton into the third round.

Rock bottom of League One after losing their first four games, Davis believes the Alex can take a lot of heart out of their performance.

‘We came so close to pulling it off,” he explained. “We showed great spirit to take the tie into extra time which was no more than we deserved.

“We had a lot of chances and we hit the bar twice. You can see the spirit is there and if we can keep that going, the results will come.

“The lads were obviously disappointed but I told them that the performance was terrific. If we keep playing like that, we’ll win more than we lose.”

Davis hailed Inman as a potential big player in turning things around after producing his best game in an Alex shirt for some time.

“Brad showed what he can do and it is up to me to get those performances out of him,” he added. “He can get a goal and he gives us a chance when he plays like that.

“He’s got pace and we saw that burst and energy. It was his best game of the season so far. I have to try and get every player playing consistently well.

“I felt we did enough to get through but we will go again now. They never gave up and that is what I want. It’s still early in the season and we’re a young side learning all the time.

“They will have bad days but there are others like this one when we realise why we do what we do and why we are proud of it. Hopefully a lot of the supporters went home fairly happy and we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Crewe travel to Gillingham on Saturday in search of their first points of the season.

Tuesday sees them entertain Rochdale in the first round of the JPT while next Saturday’s home clash against Notts County has been postponed due to Haber’s call-up for Canada.

George Ray (Wales U21), Billy Waters (Wales U21) and Liam Nolan (Northern Ireland U21) are also scheduled for international duty.
