FEMALE footballers were bang on target during a festival of futsal at South Cheshire College.

Girls from colleges across Cheshire lined up against each other in the fun tournament organised by Cheshire Football Association in conjunction with the College.

The festival featured short games of futsal, a five-a-side variant of football which is played largely indoors on a smaller pitch.

Games took place in the College’s Sports Arena and were officiated by FA Officials from across the county.

Teams who took part included South Cheshire College, Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College, Mid Cheshire College and West Cheshire College.

South Cheshire College is actively promoting sport for women which is a key factor in the development of sport within college curriculum areas.

James Self, Cheshire FA College Football Co-ordinator, said: “We were pleased to stage this latest futsal festival at South Cheshire College.

“The girls really enjoyed the tournament and it’s great to see them getting involved in football at college.”

All teams played each other and had to stick to specific futsal rules which included four seconds to re-start play, kick-ins instead of throw-ins, team accumulative fouls and the pass back law.

Steph Knott, Women and Girls Football Development Officer for the Cheshire FA, was delighted with the response from all the girls who took part.

Steph said: “This latest festival was a way of bringing together girls from colleges across the area to engage in short games of futsal.

“Traditionally, many girls and boys drop out of football when they reach college age so futsal is a great way of keeping them involved and raising awareness of the football opportunities which are available to them.”

Rob Pickersgill, Sports Lecturer at South Cheshire College, said: “We were pleased to host the Futsal festival which was a fantastic event. Hopefully, it will encourage more and more girls to get involved in football at college.”
