Crewe Alexandra 2 Scunthorpe United 0
Crewe Alexandra boosted their survival hopes with three vital points at home to Scunthorpe United on Saturday, writes Jamie Davies.
Greg Leigh secured his first ever professional goal by opening the scoring in the second half, 60 seconds before teammate Marcus Haber doubled the hosts’ lead.
Leigh, on-loan from Premier League champions Manchester City, scored a wonder goal on the angle from 20 yards nine minutes into the second half.
Canadian Haber then picked up a diagonal delivery from James Jones to head home the second for his sixth league goal this season.
The win sends the Railwaymen level with Scunthorpe in 17th and seven points clear from the dropzone which includes Leyton Orient, Colchester United, Crawley Town and Yeovil Town.
The Alex also leapfrogged Notts County in the table.
Goal scorer Leigh was ‘delighted’ to score after sharing his thoughts on Twitter at the end of the match: “Absolutely buzzing massive 3 points in a massive game. Delighted to score my first professional goal, I’m so happy.”
Crewe now have a midweek break with their upcoming League One match away to promotion-chasers Preston North End at Deep Dale on Saturday (kick off, 3pm).
