CREWE Railroaders have appointed existing coach Mark Hamer as their new head coach.

Hamer, who has held the position of special team coordinator since the start of the season, will continue in this role alongside his new position at the club.

Hamer comes with a deep history in American Football and it started for him in the late 80s with the original Crewe Railroaders youth team, the Crewe Missiles.

Hamer grew through the ranks and was soon selected for the adult squad. In his first season Hamer helped lead the team to the play offs where Crewe where beaten by Merseyside Centurions.

Hamer continued to play for Crewe until 1992 when the Railroaders disbanded and Hamer joined the South Cheshire Refugees.

The "Gees" had some success and got far in the playoffs in 92 before they finally lost to Bournemouth Buccaneers on the south coast in a semi-final contest.

Whist at the Railroaders and the Refugees Hamer played, Tight End, Offensive Line, Nose Tackle, Quarterback and Slot Receiver.

The refugees folded in 1994 and Hamer took a break from playing football but continued to watch College Football and the NFL.

In 1999 a new chapter would start for Hamer, when he decided it was time to don the Helmet and pads again.

Following an advert, Hamer signed for the Chester Romans and they went on to win the second division title in his first year. Hamer continued to play for Chester up until 2006 when he played his last game.

With Hamer’s love for football as strong as ever he decided to move into coaching.

Hamer was a coach with Chester and in 2013 he was asked to become the head coach of the Romans youth team.

This was a success and players from the youth team have gone on to represent Great Britain at youth level. Following a restructure in 2014 Hamer left Chester and after many offers found himself back home with the Crewe Railroaders.

The Crewe Railroaders have started the season with one win and two losses and Hamer will be hoping he can turn the season around.

He said: “My goal is to ensure that the Crewe Railroader sustain as team and are around for many years to come. The aim is to support the committee with a competitive team on the field.

"Of course winning seasons, playoff appearances and winning championships are the ultimate goals.

“There is a great bunch of coaches on board and the players are keen to learn and are hungry for victories!

“This game has been a part of my life for so long now and I can't imagine myself ever not having involvement in American football in some capacity. I am truly proud to be the Crewe Railroaders Head Coach.”

The Crewe Railroaders host the Walney Terriers at home this Sunday and admission is free. The game kicks off at 2:30pm and all are welcomed.
