CREWE'S Shanaze Reade has become British cycling's new star after making a huge impact at the World Track Championships in Spain.

The 18-year-old joined established star Victoria Pendleton to win gold in the Women's Team Sprint, last week.

And she followed up that remarkable achievement with a fifth-placed finish in her first attempt in the 500m Time Trial.

Stunning might not even cut it to describe this achievement which is only her second ever track competition.

A junior BMX world champion, Reade started training just four months ago to stay focused for her first love.

But although she's making a medal on her BMX the priority at next year's Beijing Olympics, surely clamours will grow for her to stay on track too.

Especially as both her and Pendleton blitzed the opposition in Palma, showing their potential in qualifying as the only team to go under 34 seconds.

That time of 33.630, a thousandth of a second faster than their gold-winning final ride, was the quickest ever for the event.

Second out, Reade also posted the time to beat (34.633secs) in the 500m Time Trial and had to watch as 17 others tried to topple her.

Unfortunately the final four all pipped her, Australian Anna Meares smashing the world record to claim gold.

Still encouraging stuff to say the least.

"It was my first time riding in the 500m and I was only put in because Victoria was doing the sprint final so soon afterwards," said Reade.

"I'm thrilled to bits.

"I think I'll look a bit closer at doing this event in the future.

"In Beijing I'll ride BMX although I may ride the track as well.

"I only started training with the guys in gym and went on to the track to do some cross-over training.

"Then the times started getting better and here I am at the World Championships.

"I'm just a novice but there is more to come."
