NANTWICH Town boss Phil Parkinson has completed the signing of centre half powerhouse Darren Thornton.

His impressive defensive displays last season played a major part in helping Curzon Ashton to promotion to the Conference North from the Evo-Stik Premier division.

Parkinson said: "Darren's quality at this level is just what we have been looking for and we are delighted that he has chosen to join us despite offers to remain at Curzon and interest from a host of other clubs.

“I am feeling really pleased with the overall quality of the squad we have been able to assemble at this stage of the close season and we can't wait to start working with the lads once pre season starts in another few weeks.”

It was double delight for Parky and his back room team as hot prospect and young player of the season Elliot Osbourne also committed his long-term future to the Dabbers by signing a contract to play for Nantwich next season.

"Everyone saw the potential that Elliot has from when he joined last season and we are looking forward to helping him develop his immense talent further over the season and I am sure he is goi g to make a big contribution and develop into a fantastic player.” said Parkinson.

Thornton is hoping to a key part of Parkinson’s side next season following his arrival at the Weaver Stadium.

The 27-year-old said: “What he wants from the club and the direction the club is going in is an exciting prospect to be involved in.

“He said I going to play a pivotal part in his campaign this season, which is another reason why I came.

“I am 27 now and I just want to be playing football and that is another reason why I am here as well.”

Thornton will get the chance to exhibit his skills to the Dabbers faithful on the fantastic surface at the Weaver Stadium.

The pitch, looked after by Pete Temmen is up for the FA Groundsmen of the year award, is something that excites Thornton.

He said: “ Of course nobody wants to be playing on school pitches and looking at the surface today and it’s still got a couple of weeks to grow.

“If you can’t play football on that surface then you can’t play football on anything and it’s something I am looking forward to, playing on that pitch.”
