A CREWE teenager received a gold medal for his athletics achievements after fighting an ongoing medical condition.

Jack Williamson reached the require UK Athletics level to earn the AAA award for his 800m times this season, knocking two and half seconds off his personal best.

The 14-year-old Sandbach Boys’ School student is now in rehabilitation having suffered with a muscle and bone growth condition that required intense physiotherapy and a daily stretching routine.

“Jack will concentrate on his rehabilitation by competing in cross country events to improve muscle strength and core body strength ready for the next season,” said dad Ian.

Williamson set his gold-standard personal best time during a late season open meeting at Blackpool.

The Sale Harriers athlete, who also competes in the long jump, was presented his award by Charlie Hulson, International Athlete and Great Britain and Northern Ireland under 23s cross country team member.

The youngster’s next campaign will see him move into the under 17s category, where he will compete against athletes nearly three years his senior.

First, Williamson will take part for the final time in the UK Sportshall competition.
