CREWE Vagrants ended a four-game losing streak when they beat Windermere 2-1 in the North Hockey League Division Two West on Saturday.

Both goals came from well executed short corner conversions by Ben Morris.

Vagrants came under early pressure as keeper Jai Taylor saved from a melee in the first two minutes.

After withstanding further raids, however, they recovered to turn the tables with serious pressure of their own.

First James Holt netted, but had the goal disallowed, then on 14 minutes Morris rocketed the ball high into the top left corner from the second of three successive short corners for a 1-0 lead.

Barely three minutes later though, after failing with a corner, Windermere hit back from close range to level.

The visitors continued to challenge with a fast two-pronged break, pegging the hosts back as they pumped high balls upfield into scoring positions, then mounting a threatening run down the right flank and hitting a post.

Rich Townsend made an excellent tackle to foil another attack. A fast surge into Windermere territory followed, but without reward.

In the closing minutes of the half, however, Vagrants showed hearteningly tenacious resistance, fighting hard to win tackles, with Jonathan Woodhart solid at the heart of the defence.

Play see-sawed between halves, but Vagrants easily surrendered possession in midfield.

However, they pressed forward and were unlucky to see a corner attempt tipped over the bar.

Sixteen minutes into the half their persistence was rewarded as Morris made no mistake, rifling first time into the bottom right corner for his second.

Windermere pressed back hard, but Nathan Watson cleared well and the hosts almost added to their lead only for Tom Link to see his shot flash just wide.

The win sees Vagrants move up to seventh in the table.
