CREWE Alexandra boss Steve Davis is calling on his side to continue the momentum generated by a positive first month of the season.

After just one league defeat so far, The Alex currently sit inside the League Two play-off places in sixth position.

They rose into the top seven after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Exeter City, with Alex Kiwomya and Danny Hollands on the scoresheet at Gresty Road.

Davis says his side have enjoyed both sides of the coin in terms of luck and warned them not to get carried away in upcoming matches, starting with their trip to Grimsby Town on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

“It’s a solid start and I’ve been relatively pleased with the way the first month or so has gone,” he told crewealex.net.

“We have dropped some points that perhaps we shouldn’t have and I refer to the Hartlepool game for that.

“We have also gained some points that we probably didn’t quite deserve such as the Doncaster game.

“We have had the rub of the green a bit and it makes a change because I didn’t think we had much luck at all last season.

“Credit must go to the players and to the staff because we knew what we wanted to do in the pre-season and everyone has worked hard to give ourselves the best possible chance of having a better season.”

Saturday’s trip to Blundell Park to face the newly-promoted Mariners sees The Alex going in search of their third win in a row.

Davis has praised his players for the way they have taken to his ideas but says that comes naturally with good results.

“The players are confident and that is what happens when you are winning games or making sure you are not losing them,” he said.

“Any manager will tell you at whatever level you play at, if you have the winning habit then the confidence and morale will be high.

“We have a good group and they cannot wait to play the games. They would much prefer to be playing than training and they will want to be out there again tonight if they could be.

“That is what happens when you win games. The players buy into what you say and what you want them to do.

“When you are losing games, then they do not buy into it as much. When things are going well it is human nature to want to listen more and be more involved.

“We have made a good start but that is all it is. We have now won our first game of September but we have to keep that going.”

Chelsea loanee Kiwomya scored the fourth goal of his spell at Gresty Road at the weekend but he was pipped to the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month award.

The 20-year-old winger was beaten to the August prize by Doncaster’s James Coppinger.
