THERE was one Crewe winner at Saturday’s Cheshire Cross Country Championships as the county’s best runners competed against each other.

Arun Dight, who runs for Vale Royal Athletics Club, came home first in the under 17 boys race, finishing well clear of the field in a time of 22mins 38secs.

Meanwhile, Crewe and Nantwich Athletics Club runners were well represented among the 470 athletes taking part at Warrington’s Birchwood Forest Park.

Tom Wilne was the only senior runner, coming home 70th out of 147 competitors in the men’s race.

There was more representation in the juniors, with William Kesteven leading the club contingent in the under 17 boys race by finishing seventh in 23mins 57secs. Matthew McCormack (16th) and Thomas Adkins (17th) also secured top-20 finishes.

Annabel Goring impressed in the under 17 girls event as she came home ninth in 21mins 25secs, with clubmates Katie Unnithan (10th) and Emma Stephen (11th) just behind her.

In the under 15 category, Raif Serif (6th) and Ben Laxton (10th) secured top-10 finishes in the boys race, with Shaun Jones (19th), Corey Matravers (20th) and Peter Selby (21st) all finishing together.

Katy Adkins was the club’s only representative in the girls race, coming home 19th in a time of 18mins 20secs.

Both races in the under 13 section were well populated with Crewe and Nantwich runners, with Jake Wilson impressing in the boys race. His time of 10mins 58secs was enough for him to finish third.

Luke Darlington (10th), Oliver Atkinson (18th) and Elliot Davies-Hayes (20th) finished in the top 20, while Liam Prestwich (30th), Henry Sandland (33rd) and Archie Pordes (34th) also ran well.

In the girls race, Isobel Ashcroft (14th) and Grace Wilne (15th) were the best finishes from the club after running alongside Anna Crighton (22nd), Amy Phillips (23rd) and Emily Bevan (28th).

For the under 11 boys, Issac Leyden came home in 9mins 13secs to finish fifth, while Oliver Ibbotson’s time of 9mins 38secs earned him ninth place with clubmate Kacper Mikulski just behind him in 10th.

Haydn Jenkins (18th), Archie Varley (19th), Ogo Orungbemi (28th) and Daniel Knight (34th) completed the club’s competitors.

For the girls, Pru Lindsey ran a great race to finish fifth in 9mins 40secs ahead of fellow Crewe and Nantwich runners Ellie Huntbach (11th), Florence Brazier (22nd), Megan Brown (23rd) and Evie Crighton (35th)
