CREWE Alexandra boss Dave Artell has called on his players to spoil Plymouth Argyle’s party when they meet on Saturday.

The Alex travel to Home Park to face an already-promoted Argyle side that are still in with a chance of securing the League Two title.

They sit second, two points behind leaders Doncaster Rovers, with two games remaining but Artell’s side have form for upsetting the division’s leading sides this season.

They recorded a 1-0 win against Portsmouth, who have also secured promotion, last month and the Crewe boss says they will need a similar performance on Saturday.

“We will give them a bottle and congratulate them on that great achievement but hopefully that will be after we have taken three points from them,” Artell told crewealex.net.

“It is about developing that consistency and having the right mind-set to believe that we can do it.

“We had that at Portsmouth and that is what we will need again at Plymouth this weekend.

“That result and performance gave us great confidence because it showed that we can go away from home and beat a promotion winning team.

“I want us to go there and try and spoil their promotion party by getting a result.”

Saturday saw The Alex mathematically secure their League Two status with a 3-0 win over Leyton Orient, who were relegated to the National League as a result.

Callum Ainley, Ryan Wintle and George Cooper all scored in the first half in a win that took them up to 17th in the table with two games of the season remaining.

With their Football League status now safe for another season, attention can turn to securing players for the new campaign and keeping existing talent at the club.

One of those players is defender Jon Guthrie and Artell hopes he will join a number of his teammates in committing his future to the club.

The Alex boss confirmed talks had taken place and that Guthrie now had a decision to make.

“(Head of recruitment) Neil Baker and I met Jon’s dad down in Cheltenham and it was really positive,” he said.

“He is a lovely, intelligent guy and I think he appreciated from where we are coming from.

“He knows how much we value Jon and how we think we develop better with us.

“I cannot do much more. Jon has a decision to make. The ball is in his court and we will have made him a written offer.

“We will have to have an answer sooner rather later, so we can plan.

“I will be speaking to a few others here this week to see if they will commit for next season and beyond.”

Saturday’s game at Home Park, The Alex’s final away game of the season, kicks off at 3pm.
