CREWE golden girl Shanaze Reade, already a world champ on the track this year, has won the Elite Women's BMX World Title at the first attempt at the World Championships in Canada.

Shanaze, aged 18, demolished the opposition in an amazing final ride in the championships in Victoria at the weekend.

After stunning the track cycling world in March by joining up with Victoria Pendleton to win the first ever Women's 500m Team Sprint World Title, Shanaze returned to her original discipline at the weekend.

She cruised through her three qualifying motos, the quarter final and then the semi final, before going on to win the final and with it the Elite World Title in her first year as a senior rider.

This follows her win in the junior ranks last year in Brazil.

As she continues to sweep the top titles in women's cycling, Shanaze has even talked about jumping on a mountain bike to see if she could win the 4 Cross Worlds coming up in Fort William in a few weeks time.

The world title win has extra significance as it comes a year before the Beijing Olympics where BMX makes its debut.

Shanaze only took up track cycling to keep in shape during the BMX off-season but quickly demonstrated amazing ability, winning a silver for Great Britain in her first ever track competition.

Now the former Victoria School pupil is Women's Team Sprint champion after linking with Victoria Pendleton to take gold at the 2007 UCI World Track Championships at Palma, Mallorca.

Shanaze took up BMX aged 10 at Crewe's Tipkinder Park and is a former member of the Crewe-based Cheshire Ghostriders.

Following her competition success Shanaze has said her ultimate goal is to become Olympic champion next year, and in London 2012.

She was tipped by the Sunday Times Rich List project to be worth £3m by the year 2020.

Shanaze is currently based in Leeds to further her training but regularly travels home to see family and friends in Crewe.
