Knutsford forced to work for their eighth successive Cheshire League win by visitors Garswood United

CHAMPIONS Knutsford had to come from behind against Garswood United on Saturday to preserve their perfect start, writes Kat Davey .

The visitors took the lead when Kevin Picton applied the finishing touch to James Cotton’s assist, creating the best of the rest of the chances only to be thwarted by Reds’ in-form custodian Mark Higgs.

Leaders Knutsford were relieved to see a second Picton effort ruled out for a foul, restoring parity with eight minutes left through Dean Warburton’s goal.

Substitute Sean Lynch powered home a header with time running out to make it eight wins from as many matches.

Meanwhile Eagle Sports let slip a two goals lead before running out 3-2 winners at Pilkington, leaving them eight points adrift of the early pacesetters.

Billinge recorded a third successive win, scoring in each half through Chris Tunstall and Bobby Jones to see off Rylands.

Jonathan Matthews and Tom Bane were on target for Linotype as they won at Gamesley, while Mickey Ryan’s first half brace put Whaley Bridge in charge at Greenalls.

Michael Evans double restored parity before Rob Newton authored a decider for the visitors, who lie third.

Congleton Vale shared the spoils in Division Two with fellow newcomers Penlake, for whom goals from James Garland and Alex Grisedale established a two-goals advantage.

Carl McCurrie’s effort halved the hosts’ arrears shortly after the interval before Richard Booth’s equaliser followed a quarter hour later.

Barnton raced into a four-goals lead at Egerton, a brace from Billy Webb and another Anthony Wynne leaving the visitors in control at Mereheath Lane.

Debutant Glodi Kuba-Kuba made it 4-0 after the half hour, only for the Knutsford outfit to stage a remarkable recovery thanks to goals from skipper Ryan Barnhill, Matthew Stimpson and Shane Davies.

They ran out of time to find a leveller before the final whistle.
