FOUR Crewe and Sandbach drivers were in action at Oulton Park’s National Car Championship Race Day this weekend.

Sandbach’s Dave Nixon drove his Moston Classics-sponsored two-litre Mazda RX3 in the Hammerite Racing Services Classic Group One races.

It was the first and only race of the season for Nixon, as engine problems including a burst radiator hose and a slipping clutch were hampering his chances of competing for a podium place.

The hose was quickly repaired but nothing could be done about the clutch, and Nixon was forced to start from seventh hoping that the clutch would last the race.

But a great drive helped him pass two cars on lap four and though he dropped a place on the next lap he held on for an impressive sixth in difficult circumstances.

Sandbach’s Pietro Caccamo drove his 1300cc Lancia Fulvia in the Thermex Classic Saloon and Historic Touring Car Championship, finishing a creditable eighth.

Having qualified for 12th place on the grid, Caccamo’s suffered a poor start in the main race and he dropped to last heading into the first corner.

However, he produced a slow and steady race to climb through the ranks with a combination of passes, retired cars and crashed opponents.

Weston’s Mick Whitehead raced his M&M Group sponsored 1600cc Caterham 7 in the McMillan Motorsport Caterham Graduate Championship.

Starting from seventh on the grid, Mick had a thrilling and hectic first lap tussle between the evenly matched cars and had managed to climb up to fifth by the end of the lap.

An off-circuit excursion cost Whitehead some places on lap seven and he dropped down to 13th place, but he once again fought his way through the pack to finish seventh overall.

Colin Flynn from Willaston was driving his 1293cc Morris Mini Cooper in the Thermex Classic Saloon and Historic Touring Car Championship, and though he qualified in 10th a disastrous mechanical fault ended his hopes of competing in the main race. and he was forced to pull out.
