STEVE Davis could be named as the new boss at League One rivals Wolves next week.

The 47-year-old is currently the odds-on favourite to fill the vacancy with Kenny Jackett and Steve McClaren also believed to be in the running.

Davis insisted he wouldn’t apply for the position but speculation suggests the club approached him with initial interviews already conducted.

Alex supporters now face an anxious few days to see if Davis is unveiled at Molineux – leaving Crewe facing an uncertain summer after his stunning 18-months at the helm.

Director of Football Dario Gradi insists they already have one eye on the future.

“We haven’t talked about it at any length but we’d have an idea as where to start,” he said.

“There are people we identify.

“I think we are producing coaches here.

“James Collins and Neil Critchley will go on to do something, somewhere.”

Supporters may view another inside appointment with trepidation after Steve Holland’s troubled 18-month tenure.

The former Academy Director and Alex first-team coach has gone on to taste success at Chelsea – picking up medals in the Champions League, FA Cup and the Europa League.

And Gradi views his achievements as payback.

“It gives me a lot of pride to see what Steve has done at Chelsea,” he added.

“Especially because of the way he was treated by a minority here.

“It’s almost like sticking two fingers up at those that booed him out.

“It’s a great shame.

“I would have enjoyed his success a lot more if it had come here.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Ollie Turton has signed a new 12-month contract.

The versatile 20-year-old broke into the first team last season, operating at both right wing-back and the centre.

Striker Max Clayton has been named in the provisional England squad for next month’s Under 20 World Cup in Turkey.

And Steve Phillips has announced his intentions of holding on to the number one jersey for next season.

The 35-year-old faces renewed competition from Alan Martin and Ben Garratt.

“Hopefully I’ll be injury free,” he said.

“I’ll be doing my best to make sure the boss continues to pick me.

“Until someone tells me I’m not good enough, I’ll always want to be number one.

“That’s the way I’ve been since 1996.”
