MAX Clayton is set to make a sharp exit out of Crewe Alexandra.

Boss Steve Davis believes the 18-year-old striker is almost certain to turn down a new contact after further talks with his agent proved fruitless.

And that means Clayton could depart as early as August if the club decide to cash in rather than risk a tricky tribunal next summer.

Despite being reportedly linked with a seven-figure move to Premiership Liverpool among years of speculation, it’s highly unlikely that Crewe will receive the compensation they will feel his development and potential warrants.

Supporters have been quick to voice their feelings across social networking with Clayton set to tread a rare path against the Alex formula - once again vindicated by Ashley Westwood and Nick Powell securing top-flight moves last season.

However Davis insists the club will not rush to offload Clayton.

“It is probably clear that Max is not going to extend his contract,” he said.

“It isn’t a disaster because we still have him for another season and we’re looking forward to working with him this summer.

“We have to get him playing well and scoring goals and then we’ll see what happens.

“He’s still our player and under contract in terms of compensation.

“There are various options open to us and we’ll decide what is best for us and him.”

Crewe expect to add more signings this week, despite admitting advanced talks with a winger have broken down.

Sources suggest that target was Hereford United's England C international Sam Clucas, 22, who could now head for Scotland.

Vadaine Oliver was officially unveiled as the Alex’s first summer singing on Monday after moving from Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee – believed to be in the region of £30,000.

The 6ft 4in striker scored 14 goals in 41 games for the Blue Square Premier side last season.

And Davis believes the 21-year-old can progress further after rebuilding his career since being released from Sheffield Wednesday.

The boss added: “He had an injury at a crucial time so he didn’t get a chance to show what he could do.

“He’s had to drop down, got an opportunity at Lincoln and done well.

“He’s ambitious, wants to do well and wants to come here.”

Crewe have announced pre-season home clashes with Manchester United (Monday, July 29) and Aston Villa (Friday, July 29).
