Seven footballers have been arrested in connection with an alleged serious sexual assault in Cornwall.

It is thought to relate to a group of more than 20 Crewe Alexandra players who were in Cornwall for pre-season training.

Following the alleged assault of a woman in her early 20s, five players were arrested in Redruth and two were arrested in Cheshire.

Five men, a 35-year-old from Crewe, a 24-year-old from Nantwich, an 18 year-old and a 24-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent and a 19-year-old from Warrington, were taken to custody centres in Camborne and Newquay.

The other two men, aged 21 and 20, were arrested in Cheshire.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a complaint of sexual assault has been made following a report of an incident at 4.30am on Saturday in Redruth.

The footballers have been released on police bail until September and October, pending further enquiries.

The club has made no comment.
