STEVE Davis has demanded improvement from his Crewe side with the big kick-off just over two weeks away.

The Alex boss wasn’t happy with his side’s performance in a 1-0 defeat to Championship outfit Blackburn on Tuesday night.

Former Crewe trainee Grant Hanley bagged a free-header on 11 minutes to settle a relatively tame affair at Gresty Road.

Davis wants his players to find their focus.

“I was pleased with the work out but I wasn’t particularly pleased with the performance of most of our players,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone really came through like they should have done.

“They need to sharpen up and it’s their minds as much as anything else because they are not where I want them to be at the moment.

“I expect better, but we’ve still got some decent games to play and hopefully it will come together.”

New signing Anthony Grant, impressive striker Vadine Oliver, Lee Molyneux and Harry Davis were among those to miss out.

But Davis expects all to figure at either Chester on Saturday or Stafford on Monday.

“We have a lot of players unavailable and I think the majority would come into the team,” added Davis.

“We’ve only got a couple of weeks to go and we need them training and involved in the games.

“It’s nothing serious, just a few knocks here and there, and I’m expecting to be close to full-strength for the weekend.”

Former Stevenage and Southend midfielder Grant, 26, arrived on a two-year deal on Monday and Davis is expecting him to make an impact.

“Anthony is not going to be another Luke Murphy and I don’t want him to be,” continued Davis.

“We’ve brought in a player with a lot of experience, he’s an athlete who works very hard and he’ll add steel and character.

“He’s not come for the money, that’s for sure, he’s come to play attractive football.”

Crewe could still move for last season’s hero Brad Inman, although Burnley have also expressed an interest.

The 21-year-old midfielder who scored eight goals for the Alex in a six-month loan spell is mulling over offers.

“I’m happy with the squad I’ve got, I’ve got options and I think we’re stronger,” said Davis.

“But there may be room for one more if we can get that creative, goal-scoring midfielder.”
