STEVE Davis insists it is up to him to put Crewe back on track ahead of Saturday’s crunch derby against Port Vale.

Alex supporters fear the worst after seeing the season reach a new low with Tuesday’s shock FA Cup exit.

Two second-half goals condemned The Railwaymen to an embarrassing defeat at home to League Two Wycombe – sparking calls for the manager’s head across social networking.

Almost unthinkable after seeing him lead Crewe to promotion and a JPT win at Wembley, problems on and off the pitch over the last few months have now left many scratching their heads.

Davis admits the buck stops with him ahead of a potentially fierce clash with the Valiants down Gresty Road.

“I am the one that has to put this situation right now,” he explained.

"This is as low as it gets.

“We let the fans down big-style and I’m very disappointed because I expect so much better.

“Wycombe deserved to go through and we deserved what we got.

"I really wanted to do well in this competition but the players haven't grasped the magic of it "I think they want to do well, it’s just being able to perform and they are struggling to do it.

“Their confidence is very low and it is not happening for them.

“They all seem to be in the same situation.

“Nobody would love this group to be doing better more than me.”

Davis will weigh up loan moves ahead of the Vale clash with some key decisions to make.

Keeper Ben Garratt suffered a tough night against Wycombe after waiting for his chance between the sticks.

The 19-year-old fluffed a long-range shot and brought down Steve Craig (50) who made him pay from the spot.

Gary Doherty highlighted more defensive woes with his close-range finish from a corner on 70 minutes to seal victory in the First Round replay Max Clayton misses out after limping off in the second-half while Matt Toole and Ryan Colclough are also unlikely to figure.

Adam Dugdale, Brad Inman and Chuks Aneke could all come back in.

“I have to have a look at Ben and it felt right to play him,” continued Davis.

“He looked a bit nervous but until you put them into that situation, you don’t know.

“Max is on crutches.

“We think it’s an ankle ligament but we won’t know the extent of it yet.”
