Pressure builds on rock-bottom Crewe Alexandra

Crewe Guardian: Pressure builds on rock-bottom Crewe Alex Pressure builds on rock-bottom Crewe Alex

STEVE Davis says rock-bottom Crewe must take their chances in Saturday’s crunch clash at Colchester.

The Alex fell to the foot of the League One table after a 2-0 defeat at promotion-chasing Wolves on Boxing Day.

And although the boss took heart from a battling performance, he knows his side must take every opportunity to ensure three points at the Community Stadium.

“I was disappointed with the result but I was quite pleased with the performance at Wolves,” explained Davis.

“We had chances and we were in the game right up until the final minutes.

“We didn’t make a great start but we settled, got the ball down and played.

“They had a real spell in the second-half when they went in search of that second goal but we kept them out and remained in it.”

Michael Jacobs ensured a nightmare start for Crewe, heading home Scott Golbourne’s left-wing cross from close range after just three minutes.

Wanderers went on to hit the woodwork twice although the visitors wasted two glorious chances.

On-loan striker Tom Hitchcock should have done better with his one-on-one opportunity early in the second-half.

And sub AJ Leitch-Smith looked certain to bag a shock leveller but fluffed his lines after a sublime pass from Chuks Aneke just two minutes from time.

Top scorer Leigh Griffiths wrapped it up with his 13th of the season in injury time.

“Those two chances could have changed the game,” continued Davis.

“Tom was slipped in by Chucks and it was a good save from the keeper.

“Then AJ was played in late on but it was a miserable effort.

“From possibly being 1-1, we concede a second goal in injury time.

“That was the major difference, the ability to put the ball in the net.

“We went to Molineux in front of a big crowd and created seven or eight chances.

“If you take two of them, you have a chance.

“With some better finishing, we could have got something from it.

“Now we have to take this performance into the Colchester game.

“If we can perform like that and take our chances, we have every chance.”
