STEVE Davis may look to bring in reinforcements after a damaging defeat to rock-bottom Stevenage.

Fresh from the jubilation of beating local rivals Port Vale at the weekend, Crewe failed to back it up as their relegation fears resurfaced on Tuesday night.

Francois Zoko’s early strike proved decisive, leaving the Alex just one place and two points outside of the drop zone ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Swindon Town.

Mathias Pogba hit the woodwork twice while Chuks Aneke wasted a free header from close range as they failed to capitalise on a golden opportunity for three points.

“I’m amazed we didn’t get something but you don’t get points from keeping the ball,” explained Davis.

“We had the chances and we were camped at their end during the second half but we couldn’t get the breakthrough.

“I thought we played well but we have come away with nothing.

“The front four worked hard but we lacked the quality.

“I think if we’d got the equaliser we’d have gone on to get the second and third.

“They were stubborn and it was like an attack versus defence training session at times.

“But it boils down to putting the ball in the net and we didn’t do it.

“It’s very frustrating, but we move on.

“The performance was pleasing but the result wasn’t.

“We’ll keep going and we are playing well enough – this was just one of those days.

“We’ve got eight injuries and we could only name five on the bench but it’s not an excuse.

“We might look at bringing in a winger to help us and hopefully we’ll have one or two back for Saturday.”

George Evans could return from injury along with Abdul Osman (foot) and Uche Ikpeazu (ankle) while Fulham shot-stopper Neil Etheridge is expected to stay between the sticks.

The 24-year-old made his debut on Tuesday after rejoining Crewe on loan until April 13.

“Uche’s ankle has been improving and he also picked up a dead leg but that has got better,” added Davis.

“Neil did well for us and looked a real presence so we were always interested in bringing him back when he recovered from injury.

“We’ve got to get back on track and every game is important now.”
