STEVE Davis wants to see his Crewe Alexandra side start 2015 out of the drop zone.

The Alex boss is looking to bring more festive cheer by plotting further upsets over the next few days.

Fresh from that morale-boosting 1-0 win over league leaders Bristol City, the Railwaymen want points out of a trip to Oldham on Boxing Day and at home to Preston on Sunday, December 28.

A Jamie Ness blockbuster in the 73rd minute proved enough for the Alex's fifth victory of a difficult season so far, closing the gap to safety to just three points.

Davis says it is vital they build on Saturday's spectacular result.

"It was a terrific three points for us and now we have got to build on that," he explained.

"That will be our motivational tool for Oldham.

"It's important that we try and get some real momentum going now.

"When you get a win like we did against City, you cannot wait for the next game to come around.

“They’ll be determined to put in a repeat performance and if they can reach that level consistently, that’s when you get the results.

"We need wins and I think we've always tried to be positive since I took over.

"But you've got to be careful, by being positive sometimes you can get caught on the counter.

"Newcastle found that to their cost at the weekend.

"Alan Pardew went for it with the substitution and then they get done from their own corner.

"You have to try and get the balance right.

"Sometimes you have to think about holding on to one point or risk losing by trying to snatch all three.

"I put George Cooper on against Bristol because he is a game changer.

"He's got that ability and was involved in the goal and could have also made it easy for us with a chance in the dying minutes."

Davis was delighted to see the victory voted the LG Performance of the Week as decided by a five-man panel including Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It was a surprise because there were a lot of good performances over the weekend," he added.

“It’s a reward for the staff and players who have worked hard to improve our performances.

“It’s good to see that improvement being recognised and shows we are heading in the right direction.”

Davis is hoping to see some of his squad back for Oldham after missing 10 players against Bristol City.

Alan Tate is definitely out after his loan spell expired although the boss still hopes for a return next month.

Matt Tootle might be in the equation after shaking off a tight thigh muscle while Lauri Valla Dalle is still struggling with an ankle injury.
