STEVE Davis insists he’s still the right man to lead Crewe Alexandra.

Rock-bottom of League One and reeling from an FA Cup embarrassment against non-league Eastleigh, some supporters have begun to call for his head.

Alex had goalkeeper Ben Garratt sent off for bringing down the lively Yemi Odubade just over the hour mark.

Ben Strevens’ second-half penalty secured the National League side’s 1-0 win against 10-man Alex to pile on the pressure.

Already the seventh longest-serving manager in the country after four years in charge, the 50-year-old intends to come out fighting.

“I’ve never doubted or felt I wasn’t the right man for the job,” he said.

“I’m sure that if there is a better man out there the board will have recognised that and if someone can come in and work within the restraints of the club and the challenging world we face at Crewe then mine, that’s not my decision. It’s theirs and I understand that.

“I don’t focus on that, I don’t think about it.

“I know what is going on around us and it’s become popular to sack managers because people get fed up of seeing the same man on the touchline, hearing you get interviewed and fed up of the same things.

“Continuity is important and what new managers can bring, sometimes it can work but most of the time it doesn’t or only for a short amount of time when you look at teams like Leeds.

“The answers aren’t just with the managers, they are with the rest of football clubs too.

“What’s going on behind the scenes and the way the club is run.

“It’s getting harder with how the game is evolving for lots of reasons, too many to talk about.

“It is a very challenging environment.

“We are doing what we can, it’s changing all the time and we are looking at ways of trying to improve.

“The one thing we all want to be is successful.

“It is a job which I thoroughly enjoy, it is very challenging but one that I love doing.

“I can say 100 per cent I am with the club and want to do better for the club in the future.”

Crewe look to return to winning ways with a trip to Bradford City on Saturday.

Ben Garratt will be between the sticks after The Alex won their appeal against his sending off against Eastleigh.

Forwards Ryan Colclough and Brad Inman should shake off knocks to also figure.

Centre-half Ben Nugent says he’s relishing trying to cope with giant Bradford striker James Hanson.

“He’s a physical bloke but I don’t mind a bit of argy-bargy,” he said.

“It’s always good to play at Bradford, it’s a big stadium and one to look forward to.”
