FANS of Crewe Alexandra are being asked to lend their support to a former star who is suffering with Alzheimer’s.

Popular midfielder Stan Bowles, who scored 18 goals in 51 league games for Alex in 1970 and 1971, was diagnosed with the condition in 2015.

Queens Park Rangers, who Stan played for from 1972 to 1979, has agreed to commemorate Stan during the club’s pre-season friendly with Bournemouth on Saturday, July 29.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the club’s explayers’ foundation, while the tickets are also eligible for Gift Aid.

Steve Flannery from Just for Stan, the organisation set up in honour of the five-cap England international, said: “Stan was never granted a testimonial at Loftus Road because he played only seven, not the requisite 10 years.

“We desperately need the help of all football fans, espectially of Stan’s former clubs, to help sell out the stadium.”

The QPR No. 10 Foundation is a charitable organisation that raises funds towards the medical assistance, physical and pastoral care, and other requirements of former R’s players, managers and staff.

Tickets went on sale on Monday, June 12, costing £12 for adults and £6 for children, and are available at qpr.co.uk
