GUDJOHN Thordarson insists Crewe cannot buy their way out of League Two next season.
Although supporters are clamouring for new blood after a major exodus over the past few weeks, the Alex boss issued a clear message.
Apart from two or three new faces, he’ll have to go with what he has got.
Crewe spent big last summer under ex-boss Steve Holland with only relegation to show for a £500,000 plus investment to try and stop the rot.
Thordarson says he’s paying the price.
“I think the club spent some money last year,” he explained.
“We’re trying to bring some of it back, we sold Tom Pope and we trimmed down the squad.
“The reality is sometime harsh but my job is to respond to that and I don’t have a great deal of money to throw around.
“We can’t buy our way to promotion; we have to work at it.
“We need to be sensible and make the right decisions.”
Back from a month away, Thordarson says he’s been on no jolly, spending time to size up additions he can make.
“It’s been busy,” he added.
“I may be trying to find more quality that I can pay for.
“That has been difficult to accept but I have looked all over and the amount of players I have gone through is horrendous.
“Hopefully we’ll see two or three of them come in over the next few days.
“I can’t see the point of discussing what I am doing.
“I just want to do the deal and when it is done, they’ll know.
“We are not looking for quantity, just quality.
“If I can get three more in then I will go with what that will give me.”
Thordarson believes there is more to come from his current crop, promising every player a chance on their return to training this Monday.
“Last summer they had money to spend and some of the players they brought in still have to prove what they are capable of doing,” he said.
“It’ll be a big test for them but I honestly think that some of them have got more in their locker.
“I’m giving everyone a fair chance and they know what will be required when they come back.
“Those who respond to it will benefit and those who don’t will struggle.
“I don’t want to go with a big squad.
“We will be ready no question.
“Hopefully we’ll see some of our players reborn, getting stronger and have the desire to go out and win games.
“It’s not our way to buy our way into the future, we will work our way into the future.”
Ready to work with new number two Steve Davis, Thordarson believes his changes are starting to take effect.
“We’re going to build our backroom staff with hard working, committed people and we’ve got to make sure we all look forward to coming to work every morning,” he continued.
“We are now building the team.
“It’s always difficult coming into a club that has been settled for a long time but now we are seeing changes taking place and we’re looking improvement on and off the pitch.”
