STEVE Davis has backed new striker Mathias Pogba to make an impression in League One this term.

After scoring six goals in seven games before last night’s clash against Huddersfield, the 21-year-old is emerging as a fans’ favourite.

The former Wrexham forward also set up Max Clayton’s 11th-minute opener in Saturday’s draw with Championship side Bolton Wanderers before Martin Petrov levelled from the spot.

“Pogs is a handful for any defender,” explained Davis.

“He’s big, strong, quick and has ability to take goals.

“He’s going to be a bit raw because he hasn’t been in the professional game for long, but he’ll only improve.

“He’s different to what we have had and that is what makes him an asset.”

Davis ruled out bringing in another striker after Shaun Miller completed his move to League One rivals Sheffield United for a nominal fee this week.

“It was time for Shaun to have a fresh challenge,” added Davis.

“He was fifth choice and it was a good opportunity, so good luck to him. I think the front four are going to be a handful.

“We have a decent squad, it’s not massive but we can rely on the loans as and when we need them.”

Alan Martin looks set to start the season between the sticks while the club wait on further news on a knee injury to Steve Phillips.

Kelvin Mellor is also touch and go for next Saturday’s Capital One Cup clash at home to Hartlepool but both Luke Murphy and Matt Tootle are back in training .

Although pleased with pre-season so far, Davis insists his players must improve if they are to establish themselves as a League One force.

“The reason for playing three Championship sides is because it’s a good benchmark for the level of quality that we could be up against,” continued Davis.

“I think all the new boys have integrated well and they’ve added to the squad in terms of size and experience.

“They all want to show they are good enough to play in this division and I think they will have to improve a little bit to do that.

“It’s the same for myself and Neil [Baker]; we need to try and continue that euphoria that built up last season.”

Although due to miss last night’s action with a hairline fracture of his little toe, AJ Leitch-Smith should be in contention to face Barnsley next Tuesday.
