Feeling good about the future

STEVE Davis believes Nantwich Town have every chance of being a surprise package in UniBond Premier.

The feel-good factor is still rife within the Dabbers camp after successive promotions and moving into a state-of-the-art new home.

And it shows no signs of abating according to the boss.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm around the place,” said Davis.

“I wouldn’t make any predictions but we’re confident.

“We have been for the last two or three seasons and we’ve got the same feeling.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean success but it’s good to have it.

“We all want to do well and I think that spreads through everyone connected with the club.

“It will be a whole new experience for us again.

“We’ll be a bit of an unknown quantity and that can work in your favour.

“The fixtures look great and there is some real tests there.

“The bookies have set their early favourites and we’re happy to be around the middle.

“I believe we’re 28/1 for the title and we’re more than happy with that.”

After bringing in ten new faces this summer, Davis believes Nantwich now have their strongest-ever squad.

“It’s a lot of players, its virtually another team,” he added.

“We’ve lost five but we needed competition for places and we’ll certainly get it from those we’ve brought in.

“We need to try and get the best possible squad in time for kick-off.”

Nantwich began their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 win at NWC outfit Stone Dominoes.

Peter Heler bagged the only goal of the game, settling a decent work out for the men in green.

Ryan Green made an impressive debut, going close twice before the Dabbers took the lead on 45 minutes.

Dave Whittaker’s drive was blocked and Heler was well placed to make the most of the rebound.

Largely dominant throughout, Dave Whittaker thought he’d made it pay only for an offside decision to thwart his 70th-minute header.

Dave Tickle and Mark Beeston also caught the eye in a solid start to preparations.

Nantwich entertain Chasetown on the artificial surface tonight before stepping up next week.

“We’ll have another three half-hours against Chasetown,” explained Davis.

“It gives us a chance to change things around but it will be back to normal afterwards.”

The Dabbers head to Biddulph Vics next Tuesday, followed by a trip to Kidsgrove Athletic next Saturday.

The eagerly-awaited match up against Crewe takes place on Monday, August 4.

Kick-off at the Weaver Stadium is at 7.30pm.
