Victory snatched from Nantwich Town grasp after Ashley Carter opening goal

A HOST of missed chances, a sending off and poor defending in the latter part of the second half contrived to make Nantwich concede two precious UniBond points on Humberside at the weekend.

Victory was snatched from their grasp four minutes from normal time when Ferriby midfielder Russell Fry took advantage of a static defence to tuck the ball beyond Lee Jones.

Nantwich dominated the opening 20 minutes, with Ashley Carter going close in the first minute with a dipping shot from that fizzed close to the right hand post from a Glyn Blackhurst pass.

But the hosts gradually eased their way into the game with left back Kevin Larvin and winger Colin Hunter combining well.

Still, Nantwich took the lead in the 29th minute when a long throw from Blackhurst into the six-yard box was driven home by Carter.

At the other end, Lee Jones saved well from Russell Fry and Hunter.

A minute before the break, Nantwich could have doubled their lead but Charlie O’Loughlin headed narrowly over the bar from Danny Griggs’ corner.

After the break, Nantwich failed to match their first half endeavours.

They also lost captain Phil Parkinson to injury in the 52nd minute.

Another long throw from Blackhurst almost brought a goal, Darren Tinson’s bullet header rebounding off a post.

Hunter went close for Ferriby with a short-range header. From the goal kick, Nantwich swept up field and had it not been for Wilson twice reacting on his line in quick succession, either Lennon or Blackhurst could have scored.

That was almost the last time in the second period when Nantwich threatened and, as the game wore on, their play became somewhat disjointed.

To compound matters, Nantwich were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute when defender Mark Beeston was shown a straight red card for a rash tackle from behind.

Sensing they could take something from the game, the home side stepped up a couple of gears.

The Dabbers’ play became ragged, which served only to play into North Ferriby’s hands.

Four minutes from time, the home side levelled through Fry, who seized on a Bradshaw centre delivered from the Nantwich right.

Disappointed Dabbers boss Steve Davis said: “I lost count of the number of times we repeated the same errors.

“From largely dominating the first half, in which chances were crying out for a clinical finish, we then not only lose our shape, our competitiveness, but finally our discipline, which shows in the result.

Nantwich: Jones, Hawthorne, Beeston, Tinson, O’Loughlin, Parkinson, (Macpherson 52), Carter, Blackhurst, Whittaker, Lennon (Walker 89), Griggs. Substitutes: Jack, Kinsey, Southern.
