NANTWICH Town have made their first signing of the summer after snapping up former FC Halifax Town defender Richie Sutton.
Sutton arrives at The Weaver Stadium with a strong non-league pedigree, having played in the Blue Square Premier for both Stafford Rangers and Northwich Victoria.
The versatile 23-year-old, who can play at centre half or right back, graduated from Crewe Alexandra’s celebrated academy system but was released in 2007 before making a first-team appearance.
After impressing despite Stafford’s relegation from the Blue Square Premier in 2007/08, Sutton signed for Northwich last summer.
Although he enjoyed a promising pre-season at the Marstons Arena, Sutton failed to make his mark for Vics, groin and ankle injuries hampering him at the start of the campaign.
Sutton went on loan to Halifax before making that move permanent in January, starting 21 games for the Shaymen last season as they missed out on a place in the Unibond First Division North play offs.
Another two former Alex trainees could be joining Sutton at Nantwich in the coming weeks, with both Chris Flynn and Junior Brown talking to Dabbers manager Steve Davis.
Midfielder Flynn played alongside Sutton at Stafford in 2007/08 and moved with his teammate to Northwich last summer.
After falling out of favour at Vics he returned to former club Rangers for the second half of the campaign.
Meanwhile, striker Brown was also at Halifax last season.
Nantwich begin pre-season training today, Thursday and are hopeful of confirming their list of friendlies during the coming week.
