NEWS ROUND-UP: Coach search, pre-season dates, cup draw, youth signings

NANTWICH Town have begun the search for a new head coach following the departure of Steve Davis to Crewe Alexandra.

Applications should be sent to Clive Jackson, Chairman, Nantwich Town FC, The Weaver Stadium, Waterlode, Nantwich, CW5 5BS, to be received in writing by 9am on July 12.

The Dabbers will start their FA Cup and FA Carlsberg Trophy campaigns away from home.

Yesterday’s FA Cup draw has handed them a tasty visit to UniBond First Division North’s Warrington Town or Leigh Genesis in the first qualifying round on Saturday, September 12.

Warrington and Leigh, relegated from the Premier Division at the end of last season, will meet in the preliminary round at Cantilever Park on Saturday, August 29.

Nantwich will visit Retford United in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy on October 17.

Meanwhile, the Dabbers have some intriguing clashes set up as pre-season friendlies.

Among the scheduled opponents are Stoke City, Crewe Alexandra, Port Vale and Northwich Victoria, with a total of eight matches taking place between July 12 and August 8.

Town have signed four new players for their youth set-up.

Among them are three former Stoke City academy players, Matt Herd, Jake Linaker and Josh Abraham who impressed at recent open trials on the 3G surface at the Weaver Stadium.

Also on board is Daniel Bell, who was leading scorer for Davenham in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League.

The quartet join Mike Jones, a goalkeeper who was signed at the end of last season following his release from Wrexham, and the nucleus of last season’s squad.

The team will be competing in the North West Youth Alliance League in the forthcoming season.

At the recent annual meeting of the UniBond Football League, the club’s under 18s team were highly commended by the league management.

In what was the finest season to date for Nantwich Town Youth, the youngsters became only the third side in the history of the Northern Premier (UniBond) League to beat a football league side in the FA Youth Cup - Macclesfield Town.

More creditably, they were the only non-league side to reach the last 32 - the third round - before bowing out 2-0 to a very strong Everton side at Goodison Park.

Additionally, Tony Ledward’s youngsters achieved a creditable runners up position to Marine in the North West Youth Alliance.

Several members of the squad were regular members of the Cheshire County FA youth team throughout the season.
