Crewe Open league hold knock-out competitions


THE annual Crewe Open League individual and pairs darts knockout finals took place at the Crosville Club.

In the individual competition, the best of five legs quarter-finals saw Rob Arrowsmith, Clive Lucking and Carl Dennell enjoy comfortable 3-0 victories over respective opponents.

In the other quarter-final Dave Bickerton had to pull out all the stops, hitting a 14 darter with a 180 to beat young team-mate Shaun Wilkinson 3-2.

In the semi-finals Rob Arrowmith won the first leg and both players hit 180’s in the second leg but Clive Lucking edged the win and followed up by winning the third to lead 2-1.

Rob Arrowsmith hit back, winning the fourth leg in 16 darts but Lucking won the deciding leg in 18 darts with a 100 checkout.

Dennell beat Dave Bickerton 3-0, hitting a 21 darter in the third leg to earn his place in the final.

Dennell was in top form in the final, winning the first two legs in 22 and 18 darts, before Lucking retaliated by taking the third leg in 20 darts.

He was unable to keep pace with Dennell in the fourth set as he triumphed in 21 darts to become the individual champion with a 3-1 victory.

The least darts to finish a 701 leg was the 19 darts by John Cooper and Arrowsmith at an average of 36.89 per dart.

The quarter-finals of the pairs saw Dennell/Dave Evanson reach the semis with a comfortable 3-0 win over Matty Hamilton/Stuart Beresford.

Tony Richardson hit a 180 as together with partner Paul Sheehan they had a 3-1 sucess over opponents Steve Hassall/Mark Tirrell.

The Cheshire Cheese duo of Carl Simcox and Chris Gibson beat John Cooper/Arrowsmith 3-2.

In the other quarter final, Dave Coyne and Lucking won the first two legs in 22 darts but the pairing of Dave Patton and Dave Bettley secured victory by taking the final leg in 23 darts.

Patton/Bettley beat Dennell/Evanson in the first semi final 3-1, while Richardson/Sheehan had a 3-0 success over Simcox and Gibson.

The final was a hard fought battle with Patton/Bettley winning legs one and three and Richardson/Sheehan replying with legs two and four and then taking the fifth and deciding leg in 27 darts to become the pairs champions with a 3-2 victory.
