Bunbury challenge National Champions

BUNBURY Primary School children served themselves proud in a national cricket final’s day.

A narrow defeat to the eventual winners Bispham Drive from the midlands ended the Year 6 mixed team’s hopes of title glory.

Bunbury went through to the national showdown at Derbyshire County Cricket Club as the winners of the Cheshire competition and were in good form in Group C.

Their 260 for 1 defeated Greenway School’s 229 for 5 in the opening game, while their 238 for 2 also saw off Rawdon St Peters’ 232 for 3.

But those clashes sandwiched the loss to Bispham Drive, who needed seven wickets to amass 212 runs in answer to Bunbury’s 238 for 2.

With only the group winners reaching the semi finals, Bunbury had to settle for the consolation of taking more wickets off Bispham than any other team in the group matches.

The competition had started out with 130,000 children from 12,000 primary schools, so to reach the last 16 was an achievement in itself.

England international Graeme Swann was supporting from the sidelines and his presence was a highlight as players got a chance to chat to their ‘hero’, take pictures and sign players’ ASDA kwik cricket t-shirts and bats.
