Scott Mills has plumbed the depths with a torrent of filth - by trekking through a stinking sewer for a charity challenge.

The Radio 1 DJ was set the task of stomping through human waste in London's Victorian sewer system for a mile by fellow radio host Chris Moyles.

Scott is being given a different "mile from hell" each day this week ahead of Sport Relief this weekend.

The afternoon presenter was kitted out with safety gear before descending underground with Thames Water's chief sewer flusher Rob Smith, who has spent the last 20 years keeping London's sewage moving.

The flushers ensure the water is flowing by clearing blockages and build-ups of fat and other horrors.

Scott joked after his feat: "That was one of the most bizarre two hours of my life - I'm sure I saw last night's dinner floating past.

"The stench was horrendous, I can still smell it on myself now."

Smith said: "If the DJing doesn't work out, Scott would make a great flusher. And if running a mile in the sewers becomes an Olympic event by 2012, he'll make the GB squad."

Piers Bradford, executive producer for the Scott Mills show, said: "We chose a mile down a sewer as the prospect of it sounded suitably hellish. However, having had a trip down there myself I think this mile was a walk in the park compared to what we've got planned for the rest of the week."

Thames Water employees are also supporting Sport Relief by volunteering to take calls at the firm's Swindon customer centre.
