South Africa were in sight of a comprehensive victory despite a battling century from Sachin Tendulkar on the fourth day of the first Test against India in Nagpur.
Tendulkar gave India a glimmer of hope with 100, but his along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's (25) dismissal - both to Paul Harris in the afternoon session - left the tail exposed to South Africa's pace battery.
Debutant Wriddhiman Saha was batting on four and Harbhajan Singh 11 not out as India reached 223 for six at tea, still needing 103 runs to make South Africa bat again.
