MAY I commend Cllr Roy Cartlidge for taking responsibility for the work being done in Queen's Park (Readers' Letters, April 23)? It takes a broad-shouldered man to accept liability for such a shambolic disgrace. A golden opportunity to create something truly unique has been squandered by cultural Philistines.

Why restore the original layout of the park by felling trees if the bridges are of a modern design?

The railings, historic artefacts crafted in the LNWR Works, are to be scrapped and replaced by Ersatz Victoriana.

This is akin to a history lesson, which ignores FW Webb in favour of Sherlock Holmes.

DP Hughes.
