THE link between Crewe Green Roundabout and Hungerford Road and Sydney Road will be closed to motorists for three months as highway improvement works continue.

The closures mark the beginning of phase two of the Crewe Green Roundabout scheme and will see signposted diversions in place from the evening of Tuesday, April 17.

A single lane of traffic will be maintained under traffic light control between Hungerford Road and Sydney Road. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained at all times.

The 12-week closure will allow for the construction of the northern section of the new roundabout layout.

During phase two, the existing traffic lights on Crewe Green Roundabout will be switched off and new toucan crossings turned on.

Councillor Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways, said: “We appreciate that there will be disruption to people’s journeys while this important stage of the roundabout scheme takes place and I’d like to thank motorists for their patience as works continue.

“The scheme is progressing well and once fully open later this year, the new roundabout will ease congestion and remove a traffic pinch-point which has frustrated motorists for many years.”

This Sunday, Crewe Green Road will be closed near to its junction with Crewe Green Roundabout from 8am to 1pm. Then, from 1pm to 6pm, Crewe Road will be shut to traffic near its junction with the roundabout.

On Monday, University Way will be closed between the roundabout and Beswick Drive, which leads to the service station, between 8pm and 2am.

The closures are to allow for surfacing and white lining works for the new arrangement to be carried out safely. Signed diversions will be in place.
