KNUTSFORD Mayor Cllr Peter Coan is going up in the world after helping to unveil a major boost to an independent home.

The annual summer party at Abbeyfield Knutsford was attended by the Mayor of Cheshire East Council, Cllr Lesley Smetham, and Cllr Coan, who opened a new lift and office extension by cutting a ribbon.

They were welcomed by Robert Newton, chairman of the executive committee, residents, their friends and relatives and members, volunteers and staff.

Abbeyfield Knutsford is an independent home for 11 residents run by a committee of volunteers together with staff.

The cost of the extension has been funded in part by Abbeyfield Knutsford Societies’ resources, Knutsford Town Council grants, Cheshire Community Foundation, the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust, the Co-op, Waitrose, Knutsford Lions, a legacy from former residents and contributions from residents and their relatives.

Mr Newton thanked those who attended the summer party and those who had so generously contributed to the cost of the lift and office extension.

He said: “The provision of the lift greatly improves the accessibility of Abbeyfield Knutsford.

“The lift is large enough to accommodate wheelchair users, allows the whole of the first floor to be wheelchair accessible and should ensure the long-term viability of the house.”
