POLICE officers are mounting a special campaign to save lives and reduce injuries and disturbances in the run up to bonfire night.

PCSOs gave Winsford town councillors an update on their efforts to warn children of the dangers of playing with fireworks and setting bonfires.

Operation Treacle has seen officers visit every school and college with fire safety messages.

PCSO Matt Johnson told councillors at a meeting on Monday: "In the run up to bonfire night we are engaging with all colleges and schools to reduce injuries and damage."

It is the first time the police have adopted a partnership approach and joined forces with Weaver Vale Housing Trust, CWAC and Cheshire Fire and Rescue to run a co-ordinated campaign.

PCSO Amy Hough who specialises in youth engagement across Cheshire told councillors they are making sure the same safety messages are being given to all primary schools across the county.

Officers have already visited several housing estates and distributed leaflets.

The police are also warning children about their behaviour on Halloween night.

Leaflets are being distributed to elderly residents so they can display a red cross on their window if they don't want youngsters to knock on their doors.
