A CAR smashed into the wall of a Winsford house in the early hours of the morning - the second time in 10 months a vehicle has hit the property.

A couple in bed upstairs at their home on Dingle Lane fear it's only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured.

A red Honda sports car crashed into the wall outside their house shortly before 3am on Sunday, October 14.

"We were fast asleep," said the 61-year-old occupant who has lived in the property with his wife for more than 20 years.

"Our neighbour got us up banging on the door. When we saw what happened, we said: 'Oh no, not again!'

"A car was in our front wall and there were three police cars outside."

The impact of the collision twisted a pillar on the brick wall around the house and damaged another pillar.

The couple had only recently completed repairs to damage caused by an earlier crash.

At around 4am on New Year's Day a black BMW smashed into the same wall.

"Last time there was considerable damage," said the resident. "We had to have a new wrought iron railing and gate fitted and have two pillars rebuilt. It took seven months."

The occupant's 58-year-old wife added: "We have been in this house for over 20 years with no traffic problems and then twice in 10 months this happens.

"It's only a matter of time before there is a fatality.

"We're convinced drivers are coming from the bottom roundabout by the river, up through Weaver Street and Dingle Lane to avoid the police as they are normally on the main dual carriageway.

"With all the additional housing that has recently been built and the double parking on both streets, it's about time this was made one way going down towards the bottom of the town."

A police spokesman said: "At 2.51am on October 14 police were called to Dingle Lane in Winsford following reports of a one vehicle collision.

"A car had collided with a wall and the driver left the scene.

"Officers made a search of the area and arrested a 36-year-old man. He has since been charged with failing to provide a specimen.

"He will appear at South and East Cheshire Magistrates Court on November 1."
