A HIGH school in Widnes is celebrating following the announcement that its PE team has been named on of the best state run faculties in the UK.

Wade Deacon High School was recognised for its all-round sporting provision and achievements in 2018 in the annual list published by School Sport Magazine, securing fifth place amongst all UK schools.

Phil Tusler, publishing editor of School Sport Magazine, said: "This has been another remarkable year for competitive sport in schools and Wade Deacon High School deserve their achievement. Congratulations to all students and teachers at the school who have made this award possible. The list unashamedly reflects and celebrates competitive achievement in a range of sports and honours those schools where student health and well – being is at the heart of the curriculum."

The annual list is based on performance in 20 different sports and more than 120 different national competitions.

Being placed in the top 30 puts schools in the top 1 per cent of all state schools which makes Wade Deacon’s number five position even more significant.

Leader of PE and assistant head teacher, Adam Mitchell, said: "To be recognised in this way is a reflection on many years of hard work and dedication by students and teachers.
