A PUB and its customers in Warrington town centre spent 2018 fundraising for Warrington Animal Welfare (WAW).

The Lower Angel pub in Buttermarket Street chose WAW for their charity of 2018 and spent the year taking part in a variety of events, raising a total of £900.

Pub owner, Andrew Wharfe, said: "As a Warrington pub we always look to support a Warrington charity, as unlike larger charities you know where the money is going and how it will be spent."

The pub, which is well known for its Halloween and Christmas decorations, encouraged donations from customers by holding themed raffles at Easter, Halloween and Christmas as well as special Christmas fundraisers where customers had the chance for winning prizes by choosing Christmas stocking.

Jacquie Atherton, WAW trustee said: “We appreciate all the hard work that goes into fundraising.

"Getting support from businesses is vital to help us to continue the work we do and help more animals.

"We cannot thank Andrew, his team and the customers enough.”

WAW was set up in 1983 to reduce the amount of unwanted pets by promoting responsible ownership and neutering.

The shelter’s vet bills are £40,000 per year as they are a pro-neutering charity and microchip, vaccinate and neuter every animal in their care.

It receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the community to help fund their vital work and give animals a second chance.
