A 10-year-old from Biggin Hill has shown she is possibly the bravest girl in south-east London as these Jaws-dropping photos show her swimming with sharks.

Amy Burns recently became one of the youngest people to dive with sharks without a cage while visiting the Stuart Cove scuba diving school in the Bahamas with her family last month.

Speaking to News Shopper, Amy's sister Charlotte explained that as she had only recently received her PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certification, this was her first dive.

"You have to be 10 to do a PADI dive course, so to dive with sharks on your first dive as a certified diver must be a world record.

"They would not let you dive with sharks if you were not safe and competent and the right sort of person, but her instructor out there could see she was a good diver and had the right attitude," she said.

Amy and Charlotte, along with their brother, are all advanced divers with each holding impressive accolades from their early years.

However, as proud as they are of each other's achievements, a hint of innocent sibling rivalry keeps them in friendly competition with one another.

"She was five minutes in the water when she saw her first shark. I hadn't seen a shark until went on this holiday!," said Charlotte.

When Amy returned to Biggin Hill Junior school, she was even asked to give a presentation to nearly 400 kids about her courageous dive.

Charlotte told News Shopper how she admired her sister's fearlessness and that she hopes Amy's achievements will inspire other girls her age to take swimming and diving lessons.

"I’m so proud of her. It was a big task for her to take on.

"She was expected to learn something that someone 20 years older would be expected to handle, and she did it when she was slightly younger than me.

"I would urge anyone who is able to learn to dive to give it a go," she said.
